Preparing For Your Colonoscopy Procedure

Southern Gastroenterology Specialists perform colonoscopies for patients concerned about colon cancer. With locations in Locust Grove, Riverdale, Stockdale, and Jackson, GA, we are dedicated to our patients and helping prevent cancer. Colonoscopies can save lives but require some preparation by the patient to empty the colon.

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera into the rectum to look into the rectum and colon. You are sedated during this procedure and should sleep through it without feeling discomfort. This procedure can identify cancer and precancerous polyps in the colon. If your doctor identifies a polyp it can even be removed during a colonoscopy. Colonoscopies save lives by removing cancerous polyps before a patient has ever experienced symptoms!

Colonoscopies are only recommended every 10 years for those not at an elevated risk for colon cancer. Based on your health and your family history your doctor can tell you if you are at an elevated risk. If your doctor determines you are, they will recommend different screening tests for colon cancer so that you can have one every year.

How do I prepare?

A colonoscopy requires preparation from the patient to empty the colon. A special diet a few days before and a liquid diet the day before prepare the colon. Essentially, you want to avoid more complex foods that are difficult for your body to break down and digest.

A few days before the procedure you need to adjust your diet. Stick to lean meats for protein and simple carbs like rice, pasta, and white bread. As the procedure gets closer, choose more soft foods like smoothies and soups. The day before a colonoscopy requires a liquid diet, but that doesn't mean starving yourself. You can add clear broths and even sports drinks for some calories, but be careful to choose drinks without food dyes. Your doctor in Locust Grove, Riverdale, Stockdale, and Jackson, GA, will give you more detailed instructions to follow before your procedure. The final phase of preparation includes taking special laxatives or drinking a cleansing solution. The colon needs to be completely clean before the colonoscopy.
